Why choose us

Why over 26,000+
sole traders choose
Debitam in 2026?

Here's the honest truth: most sole traders didn't start their business because they love tax admin. You want your accounting handled properly, without surprises, so you can get back to doing the work you're actually good at.

Rated 4.9 of 5 out of 6263+ reviews on Trustpilot for 8 years in a row with Excellent Ratings + by sole traders across the UK, here's what sets us apart:

We're transparent. No jargon, no hidden fees, no chasing you for information we should already have.

We're reliable. As accountants for sole traders across every industry, we tailor your plan to your business, not a one-size-fits-all package that leaves gaps.

We're on top of Making Tax Digital. Your dedicated accountant will tell you exactly if and when MTD for Income Tax applies to you, and what you'll need to do to stay compliant.

We never let you miss a deadline. Late Self Assessment penalties start at £100 the moment you miss the filing date.

What Happens If I miss a
Self Assessment Tax Return Deadline?

Timeframe Penalty
Initial £100 penalty immediately after missing the deadline.
After 3 months Additional daily penalties of £10 per day, up to a maximum of £900.
After 6 months Further penalty of 5% of the tax due or £300, whichever is greater.
After 12 months Another 5% of the tax due or £300 charge, whichever is greater.

Sole Trader Accountants FAQs

An all-in-one package for sole traders bundles your recurring filing and financial admin into one plan. Debitam's Smart Plan for Sole Traders covers your Self Assessment tax return and SA103 self-employment pages, bookkeeping, VAT returns (if applicable), and ongoing tax efficiency reviews. Add-ons like landlord income pages, CIS, or payroll are available if your situation needs them. One plan means nothing slips through the cracks with HMRC.

As a sole trader, there are a few dates worth knowing:

Deadline What you need to do Key detail
5 October Register for Self Assessment Due by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started trading
31 January File your online tax return Due by 31 January following the end of the tax year
31 January Pay any tax owed First payment is due by 31 January
31 July Make your second payment on account May be due by 31 July, depending on your tax bill

Our accountants for sole traders track every one of these for you.

Costs vary depending on your turnover, how many transactions you process, and whether you need VAT, bookkeeping or other add-ons. At Debitam, there's no rigid one-size package. One of our accountants will talk through your business and agree a fixed monthly fee based on what you actually need, so you're not paying for services you'll never use. There are no hidden fees. Book a call to get your price.

Late filing triggers an automatic £100 penalty, even if you owe no tax. After 3 months, daily penalties of £10 apply for up to 90 days (maximum £900). After 6 months, a further penalty of 5% of the tax due or £300, whichever is greater, applies, and the same charge applies again at 12 months. Debitam's accountants work to your deadlines well in advance, so you're never scrambling at the last minute.

Once we have your records and information, our team gets to work preparing an accurate return, with careful attention paid to avoiding costly mistakes. We'd always recommend getting your documents to us early rather than waiting until January, so there's time to review everything properly and flag any tax-saving opportunities before you file.

You're not legally required to use an accountant as a sole trader, and plenty of people do file their own returns. That said, the rules around allowable expenses, VAT thresholds, and now Making Tax Digital are getting more complex. A specialist sole trader accountant can find savings you might miss, flag issues before HMRC does, and take the admin off your plate entirely, so you can focus on running your business.

You need to register for VAT once your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. You can also register voluntarily below this threshold if it suits your business. VAT returns then need to be submitted under Making Tax Digital for VAT. Debitam's VAT service is part of the all-in-one plan, so this is handled alongside everything else.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) is HMRC's move to digital record keeping, quarterly updates and a Final Declaration, replacing the traditional Self Assessment return for business income. It applies to sole traders and landlords based on qualifying income. If it applies to you, your dedicated accountant will advise on the right software and keep your quarterly updates on track.

Qualifying income Applies from
Over £50,000 April 2026
Over £30,000 April 2027
Over £20,000 April 2028
